Hey BPC fam—It’s that time of year again—Black History Month! A time to celebrate, reflect, and most importantly, own our greatness.
We know the road to success isn’t always smooth. Black professionals face unique challenges, but guess what? We’ve been breaking barriers, shattering ceilings, and redefining excellence for generations. So, let’s talk about it—what it takes to build a habit of excellence, stay resilient when times get tough, and most importantly, how we can celebrate our wins together!
What Does Black Excellence Really Mean?
It’s more than just a buzzword—it’s a lifestyle. Black excellence is about consistently pushing boundaries, showing up even when it’s tough, and setting the standard for those coming behind us. It’s about being "The Real McCoy" (shoutout to Elijah McCoy, the legendary Black Canadian inventor who inspired the phrase!).
Speaking of Excellence… Meet Some Trailblazers Who Paved the Way!
Viola Desmond – Didn’t let segregation stop her from demanding justice, sparking Canada’s civil rights movement.
Elijah McCoy – An engineering genius whose inventions kept trains running smoothly—so good, people only wanted "The Real McCoy."
Rosemary Brown – The first Black woman elected to a provincial legislature, proving that leadership has no limits.
Their stories remind us: Excellence isn’t just about personal success; it’s about paving the way for others.
So, How Can You Build a Habit of Excellence?
Set Your Bar High (Then Raise It Again!)
Mediocrity? Never heard of it. Whether in your career, business, or personal growth, never settle for “good enough.” Aim for excellence in everything you do—even the small stuff.
Pro Tip: Write down three areas where you want to level up this year. Then, take action today.
Be Relentlessly Curious
The best never stop learning. Read books. Take courses. Find mentors. Absorb knowledge like a sponge and apply it like a boss.
Pro Tip: Need inspiration? Read about trailblazers who broke barriers in your field.
Be Unapologetically Ambitious
You don’t need permission to chase your dreams. Whether it’s a career move, a passion project, or building generational wealth—go for it.
Pro Tip: Get comfortable with self-advocacy. Speak up in meetings, ask for the raise, pitch your ideas, and own your greatness.
Master Your Craft
Excellence isn’t an accident; it’s a result of practice, preparation, and persistence. The most successful people aren’t always the smartest, but they never stop learning.
Pro Tip: Invest in yourself. Take that course, find a mentor, attend industry events, and seek opportunities to grow.
Lift as You Climb
True excellence isn’t just personal—it’s collective. The strongest communities are built when we share knowledge and create opportunities for others.
Pro Tip: Take five minutes today to connect someone in your network to a resource, job lead, or mentor. It costs nothing but can change a life.
Surround Yourself with People Who Push You to Be Better
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Want to be excellent? Hang out with excellence.
Pro Tip: Network with people who challenge and inspire you. (Like at our upcoming event! )
But What About Resilience? (Because Let’s Be Real, The Struggle Is Real)
Resilience is the Secret Sauce to thriving against the odds. Life will throw curveballs. The question is: Will you let them stop you or fuel you? Here’s how to stay standing strong:
Reframe Setbacks as Setups
Didn’t get that job? Business hit a rough patch? Instead of seeing it as failure, ask: What is this teaching me? How can I use this to grow? Resilient people don’t just bounce back; they bounce forward.
Pro Tip: Keep a ‘Wins & Lessons’ journal. Celebrate your successes and reflect on what challenges have taught you.
Protect Your Energy
Not every battle is worth fighting. Prioritize your peace, set boundaries, and avoid spaces that drain you.
Pro Tip: Identify three things that bring you joy and make time for them—whether it’s reading, working out, or spending time with community.
Lean on Your Tribe
You don’t have to do this alone. Find your community—mentors, friends, and networks (like Black Professionals Canada ) who will hype you up, hold you accountable, and remind you of your greatness when you forget.
Pro Tip: Join professional groups (like Black Professionals Canada!) and attend networking events that align with your goals.
As we celebrate Black History Month 2025, I would like to share a powerful reflection on excellence from a dear friend:
"I strive to make my ancestors proud because I am their wildest dreams."
This sentiment serves as a profound reminder of the resilience, strength, and aspirations that have paved the way for our present and future.
